This is my very favorite place to get a delicious cheap lunch in Midtown. I worked in Midtown last summer too and went there nearly every day. I’m finding that I have been going there for most lunches this summer too. It is just so reliably good. I have tried a ton of the dishes that they serve here, but I usually end up going with their famous Cubano Sandwich which is hot and pressed Cuban bread with roast pork, Genoa salami, boars head Virginia ham, Swiss cheese, pickles, Margon’s special mojo (garlic oil).
Eating here is always an experience since it is an extremely bustling and narrow shop full of anxious midtown businesspeople on their lunch break. If you get flustered by hectic crowds easily, this might not be the place for you. I, however, love it. I find the atmosphere very fun and exciting.
Back to the food…. I have also had their chicken sandwich numerous times. They take one of the fantastic 1/4 leg of juicy marinated Pollo Asado and pull all of the meat of off the bones and toss it on the Cuban bread. I get pickled onions, hot sauce, and the garlic sauce on it usually.
On Wednesdays (the only day the offer the pulled pork!?), I have gotten the roast pork or “pernil” with Margon’s special garlic mojo dressing on cuban bread.
On Friday’s I have gotten their famous Octopus Salad. They fill a container up with a cold mix of large, thin slices of tender octopus and vegetables in a spicy, citrus-y oil. It is really delicious if a little on the expensive side of the under $10 spectrum.
I’ve also ordered a number of the different dishes as platters. I’ve had the Pollo Asado as a platter over yellow rice and black beans with plantains and yucca which is a daily special. Also, the Palomilla Steak the same way. I find that these portions are so gigantic I usually want a nap afterwards.
Don’t forget to ask for garlic sauce with your platters! It is just so great on all of the meats as well as on the rice and beans.
If you are fairly adventurous and have a large appetite, I don’t think there is anywhere in Midtown I can recommend stronger than Margon for lunch.
Visit all the time.
