Coup de Taco

Coup de Taco

Run, don’t walk. I am so glad the ‘hipster truck’ trend that has been happening in NYC has made its way to Philly. Every day I find myself with the same couple of options for lunch: Cheesesteak, Egg Sandwich, Meatball, etc. Sure I could get Chinese food or something, but now I have a much more awesome alternative. I LOVE mash-ups of food styles, and Coup de Taco’s mash-up of the Mexican taco format with ingredients from other ethnicities of food lead to an amazing cross-over. Continue reading →

Tacos Don Memo

Don Memos

Now. This. Is. A. Burrito.

On campus, there are a lot of burrito options. Between Lucky’s, Mexiphilly, Rosa’s, Qdoba, Chipotle and others there is a bunch to choose between. But how to know which one to go to? Well, in fact I’ve solved that problem for you (since I have tried most of them). Hands down, Don Memo’s burrito’s are my absolute favorite on campus.

I will caution you all that because everything is made fresh, it can take a while for your food to be prepared, especially during the peak lunch hours (12-1). I always call ahead and place my order. I have waited over 45 minutes for my order before, but that is something you need to understand before committing to a Don Memo’s lunch. Today, I got out of my class at 11 and called my order in. I was told it would be ready in 20 minutes so I went over there after killing 20 minutes in my room and it was ready within 5 minutes of my arrival. With that being said, if you plan properly it is WELL worth your time. Continue reading →

Lyn’s

Lyn's

Lyn’s is one of my favorite carts, for a number of reasons including the diversity of the items they make, the quality of the items, the portion, the price and more. I was ready for some breakfast at around 11:00 so I decided to make a stop at Lyn’s. Most carts only make eggs asĀ omelette’s, but Lyn’s will cook the eggs however you’d like so I placed my order of “Bacon, Egg, and Cheese on a Short Roll with Sunny-Side Eggs, Not-Well-Done, with Salt, Pepper, and a little bit of Hot Sauce (Sriracha)”. Yeah, a mouthful, but worth it. Continue reading →

Mee Noodle Shop

Mee

This lunch special was nothing short of huge and delicious. I ordered the Sesame Chicken (noted by the Chili Pepper for spicy). It came with my choice of Soup or Egg Roll which I opted for Egg Drop Soup as well as my choice of type of rice between white, brown, and fried (I chose fried).

Senor Pollo

Senor Pollo

IĀ had previously overlooked this place because it looked so clean and chain-like that I had no expectations for it, but a group of friends were going there and I was along for the ride. Turned out to be better and cheaper than my wildest dreams for this place.

Amish Market

Amish Market

I’ve walked past the Amish Market many times but never had the urge to go in (probably because I doubted the Amish Market style food in NYC could compare with the Amish Market food in Philly). But I did and am very happy I did. First of all, this place is way bigger than anyone would imagine by just looking at it from the outside. As soon as you think you’ve walked as far as you can go, there is further and deeper you can walk into this paradise of gourmet groceries. The prices were not bad either. I might come back here to pick up sausages to cook for dinner one day.

Margon

This is my very favorite place to get a delicious cheap lunch in Midtown. I worked in Midtown last summer too and went there nearly every day. I’m finding that I have been going there for most lunches this summer too. It is just so reliably good. I have tried a ton of the dishes that they serve here, but I usually end up going with their famous Cubano Sandwich which is hot and pressed Cuban bread with roast pork, Genoa salami, boars head Virginia ham, Swiss cheese, pickles, Margon’s special mojo (garlic oil).
